Re: Oldham Athletic

Oldham's home form when they had the plastic pitch was also enhanced by the fact that their pitch was often the smallest dimensions allowed under FA rules. So they had a tiny surface that bounced ridiculously high and on which bigger and more aggressive opponents could not go to ground to tackle (or they'd lose half of the skin on their legs).
So tough sides with tacklers in midfield (like McMahon etc) were often negated. Even Wimbledon hated going up there. Fashanu, who didn't exactly have the best control, said he could never get the ball out from under his feet because it was always around his shins and knees!
Fucking horrible, those pitches.
But the point about tough-tackling midfielders is a fair one: the classic 80s midfield enforcers were completely negated on those pitches. If you went to ground several times in a game, you'd be quickly injured, chastened and later get a lovely rash/infection!

Remember that 6-0 defeat well.
One of Lou Macari’s last matches in charge I think.
We had an awful record at Luton on their plastic pitch but did ok when we played QPR apart from the FA Cup loss in 1988 (I think).
Thank fuck the plastic pitches are gone though. It’s crazy to think they were allowed considering how much of an advantage they gave the home sides.
Even the great Liverpool team of the mid to late 80s struggled on them.

Think they went down as soon as they had to get rid of the plastic pitch.
Strangely I don’t recall is having as much trouble playing at QPR. Luton and Oldham away was a guaranteed defeat.

Those really were the halcyon days for Oldham fans, even if they were cheating with that stupid plastic pitch. Had some half decent players in Gunnar Halle, Earl Barrett, Roger Palmer and potato head Andy Ritchie.
Can't say I'm sad to see them go. Hopefully won't see them any time soon.

Stockport, I think Balto!
I recall our Dawson scored against them saving us from extra time.

Big picture it’s not looking good for the teams of yesteryear in the North west of England.
In no particular order:
Preston North End Macclesfield Town Bury FC Wigan Athletic Bolton Wanderers Blackburn Rovers Burnley Oldham Athletic Barrow-in-Furness Southport Rochdale
I’m sure I have forgotten some rain soaked former mill town.

Them and Luton Town were the fucking bane of supporting us in the late 80’s. Early 90’s. Getting rid of one is nice. However it is quite unsettling at the thought of the other one returning..!

That plastic pitch was a disgrace. Pretty much the type of surface that schools would have.
I remember listening to the 6-0 on the radio too. What a shit game for Phil Parkes to play his last game for us.

I bet they're only doing it so they can be the first non-league side to knock us out of the FA Cup...

The football league even engraved our name on the trophy apparently. Oldham played something like 20 mins injury time for no reason at all.

Ha put this on the other thread.
I did not shed a tear. They cost me some of my most miserable days as a west ham fan.
Losing 6-0’in the cup and few tears later pipping us to the league title. A dodgy last minute penalty.
I am sure they also got a very dodgy penalty in the 1-1 at their place late in the season .
Hopefully the plastic pitch was destroyed .
They had a decent side back then and beat lots of the big boys on the drastic plastic. A carpet laid on concrete. Not the 4g you see today.

The away leg at Oldham was absolutely horrendous for many reasons. I remember walking down the away terrace steps just as the match kicked off and we conceded within a minute before I’d even taken up a place!
The rain, open away end, their braying fans and the bloody plastic pitch was a horror show One of our lot did a strip tease in the stand as the rain poured down, which at least raised a laugh.
But worse was yet to come. The trip home in the football special ended up with us being shunted into a siding at Stockport, which meant that we were stuck there for about 2 hours or so. I remember finally getting back to Kings Cross, or Euston, whichever it was, at about 4am in the morning, totally soaked through, so, for me, I’m not unhappy in the slightest that they have been relegated from League 2 😂

I seem to remember an endless succession of goals which came off that pitch in the pouring rain in an odd way.
Without the rain and the pitch, we, as others have said, beat them 3-0

Went to the semi final and as everyone knows was a horror story, went to the away game in the league aswell and although the result wasn't as bad the performance certainly was
